Site Details

Campers: 10 Patrol sites, approx 60 persons
Area: about 3 acres
Open: all year

Little Acres Campsite was created in late 1995 in the grounds of Horton Country Park, some 200 acres of green belt open space, and is available for camping, night hikes, meetings, camp nights, revels and badge activities. It is a quiet, open area tucked away from residential housing, the closest neighbour being a large sprawling hospital site (with no Casualty Department!) some way across the woods. There are a number of new homes being built in the area (and a significant number of roundabouts!), but none are visible from the site which has views across the Country Park. It is reached by a narrow (single track) lane from the public highway about 400 yards away - there is hardstanding adjacent to the site for unloading and parking of maybe five cars, but there is no turning space for any vehicle larger than a minibus. Parking for large events is available in the adjacent Country Park car park.

The site itself is about 3 acres of open grass, on a slight south facing slope sheltered by trees to all sides (but not too close). Metered water from standpipes and 6 altar fires and one central campfire fire are available, together with a BBQ area. There is a small woodpile, but cutting wood from the surrounding park areas is not allowed.

There is a new permanent toilet block (including a 'disabled' toilet) with a shower. Paper and scraps can be burnt on site, but all other rubbish must be removed by campers - there is no on-site rubbish collection. The Country Code and the rights of private landowners must be respected, and adult supervision on the site will be expected at all times.

Around and About

The Country Park includes a large area of open woodland with walks, ponds and streams; Horton Park Farm for children with an activity area; a riding school; and the Park Rangers (01372 741191) undertake a wide range of educational activities. The woods are known for the variety of birds to be seen; greenpeckers (the symbol of the park), treecreepers, yellow buntings, hedge sparrows, greefinches, linnets and, occasionally, herons and kingfishers can be seen. The Country Park adjoins the Hogsmill Open Space to the north, and Epsom and Ashtead Commons to the west, giving walks of several miles over green belt land which has deer (if you can find them!).

The nearest town is Epsom, about ¾ mile on foot although bus E5 does pass through the adjoining estate hourly - Epsom is on the main railway line to London (Waterloo and Victoria), Guildford and Horsham. Epsom has the Ashley Centre, a fairly typical indoor 'mall', and has an outdoor market on Thursdays and Saturdays, with an antique market on Fridays. Epsom General Hospital (01372 726100) is about ½ mile from the Town Centre, about 1¼ miles from the campsite, and the local doctors' surgery is in the town (01372 724434). Churches of all denominations are around the town, the nearest being Christ Church (C of E), about ½ mile on foot towards the town.

The nearest shops are in Epsom Town, together with the Post Office, Police and Fire stations and a variety of fast food outlets - McDonalds, Pizza Hut, fish and chips etc. Provisions can be ordered (with a week's notice) from Unigate Dairy (01372 726551). Although Wednesday is early closing few shops actually do, and some open on Sundays too. There is a small 'out-of-town' centre at Kiln Lane (about 1 mile beyond the town from the campsite) with Sainsburys, Wickes, and Halfords.

The nearest camping supplies shop is Milletts in Epsom town. For a comprehensive mail order source of camping supplies, Cotswold Camping is used by Stoneleigh District Trading Service.

Nearby is Chessington World of Adventures (2 miles), the Rainbow Leisure Centre (1½ miles), and the Epsom Playhouse (1 mile). Within a reasonable distance (say 1 hours drive) are Thorpe Park, Windsor Castle, the river Wey at Guildford where boats can be hired and, of course, London with its wealth of interests including CHQ (just 30 minutes by train direct to Victoria or Waterloo from Epsom!)
